ECCC announces 2002 football schedule

By Staff
From staff reports
March 27, 2002
The East Central Community College Warriors will play five home football games this fall. The Warriors' first two games are in Decatur with Holmes visiting on Sept. 5 and Northeast Mississippi calling on Sept. 12.
After a South Division road trip to Pearl River, the Warriors host Gulf Coast on Sept. 26.
ECCC goes to Copiah-Lincoln on Oct. 5 before hosting Jones on Oct. 10 and Hinds for homecoming on Oct. 19.
The Warriors close out the year at Northwest Mississippi and Southwest Mississippi.
ECCC will not play East Mississippi in 2002 or 2003 unless it is the state playoffs, making three straight years the teams haven't met.

You're playing who?
The baseball schedules for Copiah-Lincoln and Delgado have their teams playing a school called Oliver Hardy at New Orleans in late February.
Actually, who they were supposed to play was Olive-Harvey, one of the city colleges in Chicago.
Oliver Hardy was the rather plump member of the Laurel and Hardy comedy team and, as of yet, no school of higher learning has been named after him.

MCC No. 19 in fast-pitch
The Meridian Community College Lady Eagles were ranked No. 19 in the NJCAA Division I fast-pitch preseason poll.
Lake City (Fla.) was No. 1 followed by Central Arizona, St. Louis-Meramec, and Midland (Texas).
Bossier Parish, the only other Division I program in Region 23, was listed in the Other School Receiving Votes category.

Hinds ranked in D-II softball
The Hinds Community College Lady Eagles were ranked No. 7 in the NJCAA Division II fast-pitch preseason poll.
East Central swept Hinds 3-2, 3-2 in a pair of South Division games at Decatur on March 5.
Kankakee (Ill.) was ranked No. 1, followed by Phoenix (Ariz.), Lansing (Mich.), and Kirkwood (Iowa). The Division II national tournament will be played at Phoenix.

Wolves rated high in D-II
The Copiah-Lincoln Wolves were ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA Division II preseason baseball poll.
Jeff Davis of Brewton, Ala., was No. 1, followed by Illinois Valley and Phoenix (Ariz.) College.
Jones Junior College has split four games with Jeff Davis, losing 11-7 and 12-3 at Brewton and winning 3-1 and 2-1 at Ellisville.
Itawamba was No. 18, while Northwest Mississippi and Shelton State of Tuscaloosa, Ala., were in the Other Schools Receiving Votes category.

Quite a career
Northwest Mississippi's Jason Rogan finished a stellar career for the Rangers that included a trip to the NJCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship a year ago. Rogan is third on Northwest's career-scoring list with 1,156 points. He is the first player in school history with 1,000 points, 300 rebounds, and 200 assists.

Northwest picks Anthony
Charles Anthony has been named defensive coordinator at Northwest Mississippi Community College for the 2002 football season. He becomes the Rangers' third defensive coordinator in five years.
Anthony goes to the Senatobia school from Southwest Mississippi where he coached for three years. The Bears led the MACJC in total defense the last two seasons and finished second in 1999.

Dog gone long
When the Holmes Community College Bulldogs won the MACJC state basketball championship with a 96-89 victory over Northwest Mississippi on Feb. 28, it was the first state basketball championship for the Holmes men since the 1955-56 season.
