Mayor: Fire chief's latest pay raise council's idea

Mayor John Robert Smith said Wednesday the $5,650 pay raise approved for Fire Chief Bunky Partridge during Tuesday night's city council meeting was the council's idea, not his.
Smith said he made recommendations to the council about pay raises for city department heads, but did not include Partridge's raise in his recommendations.
On Tuesday, nearly a month after Smith rescinded an $8,000 pay raise for the fire chief, the city council increased Partridge's pay to $60,000 from $54,350. City council president George Thomas, who represents Ward 1, said council members wanted to make Partridge's pay equal to Police Chief Benny DuBose's.
