All-Star basketball teams selected

Due to last week's tornado, there were safety concerns about several of the light poles at Mustang Field.
And West Jones High School will become a construction site as well, adding other safety concerns.
The Lady Mustangs fast-pitch softball team will continue to play all of its home games at the fields on Airport Drive.
The West Jones students are expected to resume classes in the old Wal-Mart Building at Laurel within two weeks.

Jones signs Wayne pair
Wayne Academy football stars Cory Cochran and Barrett Tynes have signed athletic scholarships with Jones Junior College.
Cochran, a 6-2, 180-pound receiver/running back and Tynes, a 6-3, 210-pound defensive end, helped lead the Jaguars to the Academy A Championship game. The Jaguars finished 12-2 on the season after falling to Trinity of Natchez 14-7 at Mississippi College. Cochran was a member of the winning North All-Stars in the MPSA All-Star game also at MC.
The pair joins 22 other signees for the Bobcats who won the state title last year after beating Mississippi Delta in the final.
Also signing with the Bobcats was Quitman linemen Dustin May. May was the Defensive Linemen of the Year for Division 5-4A and he helped Quitman to its first ever playoff berth and victory. The Panthers were 9-3 last year.

Crosswhite blanks Vols
Chad Crosswhite, a native of Philadelphia who transferred from Leake Academy to Madison-Rigeland Academy a couple of years ago, had a career game in a 2-0 win at Starkville Academy on Tuesday.
In addition to tossing a four-hit shutout, Crosswhite got MRA's first run on a solo homer in the first inning. Crosswhite doubled in the sixth and scored the Patriots' second run on a single by Jim Owen.
Another area transfer to MRA is sophomore Phillip Harrison, who played at Winston Academy as a freshman. Harrison plays for the Patriot football and basketball teams.

Tide a threat on diamond too
Picayune's Maroon Tide lost a 77-73 decision to Lanier in the boys' Class 4A state championship basketball game.
It appears the Tide is pretty stout on the baseball diamond as well. The Tide swept 13th-ranked Gulfport 7-1 and 11-10 in a doubleheader Saturday to improve to 16-0.
Incredibly, in the 11-10 win, the Tide trailed 9-0 after a half inning before rallying to remain unbeaten.
Picayune also ripped George County 20-2 last week.

Down the drain
In a 7-5 loss to Baldwyn last week, East Union pitcher Donald Harpole carried a no-hitter into the bottom of the seventh inning. Then the roof fell in as Baldwyn scored seven runs on just three hits to turn a 5-0 deficit into a 7-5 win.
Jerome Tyes finished off the Epic Urchins with a grand slam. Tyes also was the winning pitcher, striking out 14.

Defense keys Southeast
One factor behind the Tigers' success this season is limiting the opposition's scores. In seven of its games, Southeast Lauderdale has held its opponents to five runs or less. They are 6-1 when they've held foes to five runs or less.
