The Question …
Feb. 26, 2001
Monte Migliacio picked a good time to take over things for the East Central Community College baseball team on Sunday afternoon. The sophomore pitched seven strong innings to earn his first win of the season and also smashed a three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to lead the Warriors to a 6-5 win over East Mississippi Community College in the Rush Classic being played at Meridian Community College's Scaggs Field.
LIVINGSTON, Ala. West Alabama's two seniors Gerald Burris and Pat Stephens, combined fro 37 points in a win over the West Georgia Braves (20-6, 11-3) late Saturday. The Tigers outshot West Georgia 46 percent to 38 percent in the game's first half, but still found themselves trailing by four. West Alabama tightened the reigns defensively in the second half, holding the powerful Braves to less than 30 percent from the field. The smothering Tiger defense also forced UWG into 17 turnovers.

JACKSON Southeast Lauderdale just couldn't score when it counted most. The Lady Tigers could only muster a Andrea Ruffin free throw in the final 3:24, as Velma Jackson outscored SE Lauderdale 13-1 in the last three minutes to claim a 65-53 victory Tuesday morning in the 3A Girls State Tournament at the Mississippi Coliseum.
SCOOBA Former Meridian High standout Reggie Scott made the most of his first start on the collegiate level, going 3-for-5 with a homer and six runs batted in Tuesday afternoon at Gerald Poole Field to lead the No. 2 Meridian Community College Eagles to a 19-3 win against the Lions of East Mississippi Community College.

JACKSON It's been a long time since the Louisville Lady Wildcats have been to the Big House to participate in a state tournament. But if you think they'll vet a break after surviving a scare against Mendenhall Tuesday night, you're dead wrong. The Lady Cats' of Sheila Davis squeaked past the Lady Tigers 44-38 in overtime Tuesday to advance to the 4A semifinals. That's where they'll have to tangle with top-ranked 39-1 Port Gibson.
JACKSON The fact that high school teams playing for the first time in the Mississippi Coliseum get butterflies is common knowledge. But somebody forgot to tell the Wildcats of Kemper County. Charles Jackson's ballclub grabbed the lead two minutes into Tuesday morning's contest against the Houston Hilltoppers, and didn't trail again in taking an 85-78 victory in the 3A State tournament.
