Cox among 36 stars picked for game
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) Hewitt-Trussville quarterback Brandon Cox, named Mr. Football'' for the 2001 season, is among 36 Alabama high school players picked for the 15th annual Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Football Classic.
The game will be played June 15 at Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile.
Steve Savarese, who guided Daphne High School to the 2001 Class 6A championship, was named head coach.
The roster, announced Tuesday, was selected by representatives from the Alabama High School Athletic Directors &Coaches Association, the Alabama High School Athletic Association, each of the eight AHSAA Athletic Districts, and the All-Star Classic games committee.
Under the rules, at least one player must be selected from each of the six classifications and one from each of the eight athletic districts. No school has more than two representatives on the squad.
Easter Classic set for March 30
Sammie Davidson Softball Complex will host the Easter Classic softball tournament on March 30. It will be four homers &out and the entry fee is $125. Call V.L. Mott at 482-3639 or Alvin Alexander at 986-8694 for more information.

Thrash records hold-in-one
John Thrash fired a hole-in-one at Lakeview Golf Course recently. He used a 4-iron on the fourth hole. It was witnessed by Richard Johnson, Stacey Johnson, Doug Branning and Lamar Johnson.

Two-person scramble set for Lakeview
Lakeview Golf Association will hold a two person scramble April 20 and 21. The entry fee is $45 per person and $90 per team. Starting times are 8:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Food and drinks will be served Saturday only. Call 693-3301 for more information.

Lady Wildcats fall in softball opener
The Meridian Lady Wildcats opened their first-ever fast-pitch season on Tuesday in Soso with a visit to West Jones.
The Lady Mustangs took advantage of 26 walks to post the 17-6 win.
Erin Murphy took the loss in her first appearance in the fast-pitch circle. Artesian Boyd came in relief and went two-plus innings allowing just two hits on two runs and five walks.
West Jones' Christie Hathorn got the win. She allowed six runs off nine hits. She struck out three.
Murphy led the Lady Wildcats at the plate with two hits and a RBI. Boyd had two hits as did Kim Clayton. Stephanie Nelson had one hit and drove in one while Laura Bowles had a hit.
Hathorn and Alecia Coleman each had an RBI hit to pace West Jones.

MSU golf team places 13th
LAKELAND, Fla. The Mississippi State men's golf team sits in 13th place after two rounds in adverse weather conditions at the Florida Southern Matlock Invitational. State fired rounds of 304-308 at the par-72 Grasslands Golf and Country Club.
Veteran junior Codie Mudd paced Mississippi State, firing a 74-77 (151), good enough for a tie for 31st place.
Tulsa holds the team lead by two shots over Colorado. Virginia Tech, Missouri and Alabama are tied for third. Colorado's Ben Portie stands atop the leaderboard at six under after shooting 68-70 (138).

MUW tumbles to Lincoln Memorial
COLUMBUS Lincoln Memorial handed the Mississippi University for Women basketball team its 14th Gulf South Conference loss of the season Monday night, 61-56, at Pohl Gym.
Lincoln Memorial improved to 11-4 in the GSC, while the Blues remained with only one win and 14 losses.
Senior Chandra Beckwith and sophomore Mandi Porter led the Blues, scoring 10 points each. Hilary Ross not only led the Lady Railspitters with 18 points, but she also amassed 12 rebounds.
The Blues will play West Georgia o n Thursday at 6 p.m. in Pohl Gym.

Miller, Coleman, Blount suspended
NEW YORK (AP) Indiana's Reggie Miller and Philadelphia's Derrick Coleman and Corie Blount were suspended by the NBA for their roles in an altercation in a game Sunday.
Miller was suspended for one game and fined $7,500 for throwing a punch at Coleman. Coleman was suspended for two games and fined $12,500 for grabbing Miller's throat and throwing a punch. Blount received an automatic one-game suspension and was fined $5,000 for leaving the vicinity of the bench during the altercation.
Raymond announces retirement
NEWARK, Del. (AP) Harold R. Tubby'' Raymond, one of the winningest coaches in college football history, announced he is retiring from the University of Delaware.
Raymond, 75, is ending a 36-year career with the Blue Hens after 300 wins. He became just the ninth coach in the history of college football to win 300 games when his team defeated Richmond 10-6 on Nov. 10 at Delaware Stadium.
Point Given named Horse of Year
MIAMI (AP) Point Given, the beaten Kentucky Derby favorite who rebounded by winning four straight $1 million stakes, is Horse of the Year.
The strapping chestnut colt also was selected champion 3-year-old of 2001 in voting announced at the annual Eclipse Awards dinner in the Fountainbleu Hotel.
NMO softball registration set
Registration for the North Meridian Optimist Girls Softball League is set for next month.
Registration will begin Sunday, March 3, through Saturday, March 9 (registration will not be held Wednesday, March 6) at the North Meridian Girls Softball Complex, two miles north of 52nd Street on Mississippi Hwy 39 North (near Tommy's Seafood and Steak House Restaurant). Times for registration are Monday-Friday 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
The registration fee is $50 per girl. Girls between the ages 6 and 18 are encouraged to join the league. A girl who has never played before needs to bring her birth certificate to registration.

Meridian Invitational set for March
The Meridian Invitational Softball Tournament will be held at Sammie Davidson Softball Complex on March 2 and March 16.
The tournaments are for Men's Class "C" with a four homer limit and will use your own ASA MSP 47 Core softballs. The entry fee is $125.
