Randell Palmer and Ruth A. Borland-Lank had just what area community development clubs were looking for in the Man and Woman of the Year a commitment to the community and a desire to help.
Palmer and Borland-Lank were nominated by their individual community club, along with 12 other candidates.
The final decision was made by a committee headed by Steve Strong, a Lauderdale County Extension agent, and Joe Schmidt, the community resource development specialist at Mississippi State University-Meridian.
The honor was announced at the yearly community club awards program Jan. 28.
Clubs serve purpose for Palmer
Community development clubs are like a hub for the community, Strong said, "vital to the overall quality of life and growth of a neighborhood."
Palmer is described by his friends as a man who never wants any recognition for the work he does.
A member of Suqualena Community Development Club, Palmer never says no when asked to visit the sick in the community, whether at their home or in the hospital.
He carries home-cooked meals to shut-ins and helps with chores when they are unable to do for themselves.
Borland-Lank appreciates award
Borland-Lank was equally surprised by her award.
Active in Long Creek Community Development Club for the past 10 years, Borland-Lank has served as the club's reporter for two years.
Members recognize her as a person dedicated to helping others. She serves as leader of the Older Adults Ministries at Pleasant Hill Methodist Church, sending cards and letters to shut-ins and the sick.
She is a volunteer for the American Cancer Society and a 12-year breast cancer survivor. Borland-Lank said her involvement in the club is simple she enjoys it.
OTHER HONORS
n The Collinsville Community Development Club was awarded "Club of the Year" because of its contribution to their community and youth.
Steve Strong, a Lauderdale County Extension agent, said the "overall club is the one that best exemplifies community spirit. All the members must work together as one for the betterment of their community."
