CLINTON Two unanswered goals in the second half enabled the Vicksburg Missy Gators to claim the Class 5A state soccer championship over Meridian Saturday at Roy Burkett Field at Clinton High School.
PEARL One play. One goal. One championship. After spending hours saying Saturday's MHSAA Class 1A-2A-3A state soccer championship would come down to one key play, West Lauderdale head coach Alex George watched his prediction come true here at Pearl High School's Pirate Stadium. A fast break proved to be the fatal punch for West Lauderdale, as they dropped a 1-0 decision to Mercy Cross.

DECATUR The Lady Tigers of Southeast Lauderdale have been playing their best basketball of the season over the past few weeks. Monday afternoon, they took the first step toward this year's Class 3A playoffs. Southeast outscored Carthage in every quarter Monday and easily won a 76-52 decision over the Lady Tigers in first-round action at the Division 5-3A Tournament at East Central Community College.
LIVINGSTON, Ala. Forty minutes just wasn't enough , not even an extra five minutes. Finally another five minutes was needed to decide a classic battle for the Gulf South Conference East Division lead between the University of West Alabama and West Georgia here Monday night. In the final five minutes,West Georgia sprinted out to a three-point lead and hung on to take a 103-100 double overtime victory over the University of West Alabama.

INDIANAPOLIS Mike Tyson stepped from a courthouse into a threatened future as a convicted rapist, found guilty of attacking a Miss Black America contestant he lured to his hotel room. The conviction late Monday was Tyson's darkest moment in a troubled history with women, and it threatened to end the rags-to-riches career of the youngest heavyweight champion ever. The 25-year-old boxer could get as many as 60 years in prison at sentencing March 6 but is likely to get far less under Indiana guidelines.
Monday night's game with Lake won't keep Southeast Lauderdale head coach Kenny Neal up late pacing the floors. The Tigers coach didn't have to wring his hands or bit his fingernails in a close game. Instead, Neal's SEL team handled the Hornets with ease in the first round matchup of the Division 7-2A tournament at Southeast High School. The Tigers trounced Lake 79-53 to advance to a second round meeting Thursday with the winner of the Clarkdale-Mize game tonight a 8:15.

Rev. Danny Balint
When he is not preaching the word at New Bethel Baptist Church, you can catch Rev. Danny Balint running the clock at Southeast Lauderdale basketball games.
He says it's a good way to see his son Allen play for the Tiger JV and varsity teams.
He fondly remembers his days playing basketball at Robert E. Lee High School in Montgomery, Ala. He went on play for Auburn-Montgomery.
Balint and his family moved to the Meridian area 15 months ago. He says athletics plays a big part in his ministry.
