MCC drops pair to Hanceville

HANCEVILLE, Ala. The Meridian Community College baseball team lost a couple of heartbreakers on Sunday afternoon to fall to 1-3 on the season.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Poplarville. to take on Pearl River Community College in a single game at 4 p.m.
Host Wallace-Hanceville, which split a pair of games with MCC at Scaggs Field on Saturday, beat MCC 12-11 in the first game on Sunday, before taking the nightcap 5-4.
MCC scored five runs in the top of the seventh of the first game to go up 11-8, before Hanceville scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the win. Jessie Alvarez delivered a two-out, bases-loaded single to give the home team the win.
Meridian trailed 8-6 going into the top of the seventh, before Brian Page ripped a two-run homer to tie the game. The Eagles then added three more runs to take what seemed like a comfortable lead.
Drew Van Sickle ripped a triple and single for MCC, while Nathan Sanders had two singles and Adam Smith delivered an RBI single. Michael Goodson, 0-1, took the loss in relief.
The second game saw Meridian build a 3-1 lead, only to have the Lions scored three times in the sixth to go up 4-3.
Van Sickle singled in the tying run in the top of the seventh to tie the game, only to have the Lions take the win in the bottom of the eight. TIm Jones, 0-1, was the losing pitcher for MCC.
Smith had a single and double for Meridian, while Billy Porter ripped a two-run single.
The Eagles will return to Scaggs Field this weekend to host the 2002 Rush Invitational Baseball Tournament. Games are set for noon and 3 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Other teams competing are Volunteer (Tenn.) State, Tyler (Texas) Junior College and Clarenden (Texas) Junior College. Friday's action has Volunteer and Tyler playing at noon, followed by MCC and Clarenden at 3 p.m.
