The Question …
Who was the head football coach at USM before Bobby Collins?

National signing day got started with a bang in Meridian Tuesday morning as all 10 Meridian High School Wildcats projected to sign national letters of intent were in the MHS library to signal the official beginning of their playing careers on the next level.
GALLMAN Despite losing 20 games this season, the Raiders of Lamar High School won one when it counted and earned a spot in next week's MPSA Class AAA State Tournament with a 59-39 victory over Adams County Christian school on Wednesday night.

Northeast Lauderdale's girls outscored West Lauderdale 8-0 in overtime to take a 51-43 win in Division 5-4A action Friday night in Collinsville. The overtime rout capped a furious rally for Dan Stegall's Northeast club, who also outscored the Lady Knights 13-6 in the fourth quarter.
MORTON Rod Hollis didn't score at all until there was less than a second remaining Friday night. So in a crazy game, it was only fitting that Hollis' single point was the game-winner. After Kemper County had erased a 14-point deficit, Hollis hit one-of-two free throws with nine-tenths of a second on the clock to lift Morton to a 72-71 over the visiting Wildcats.

WEST POINT Blue collar basketball. By definition, the Lamar Raiders. Lamar used rebounding, a tenacious defense, timely free throw shooting, and perfect execution of its offense to take an exhilarating 60-53 win over the 6th-ranked Heritage Academy Patriots in the North AA Conference semifinals.
At the start of the second quarter, the West Lauderdale basketball team looked like it was headed down the same road it traveled earlier this week. Coming off a 56-36 loss at Northeast Jones on Tuesday, the Knights found themselves trailing county rival Northeast Lauderdale 22-13 with over seven minutes left before halftime Friday night. But obviously, no vision of a blowout was dancing in their heads. Because, even though West still trailed 32-26 at the half, some key board work from Shay Spells and Jeremy Jackson sparked a third quarter run that eventually gave Steve Hull's team a 57-53 road win over the Trojans.

The Answer …
P.W. "Bear" Underwood coached USM from 1969-1974 and had a six-year record of 31-32-2.
Sports Faces …
Ted Williams
Ted Williams is one of Mississippi's veteran basketball coaches. He feels he has a boys team that can make it to Jackson. So far the Oilers stand 22-6 on the season and have clinched the top seed for the Division 5-3A tournament that will be hosted Heidelberg.
Still, a loss on Jan. 18 against Meridian, still rankles the coach.
Meridian came from eight points down in the final 25 seconds to force overtime. There, the Wildcats pulled out a 94-89 win.
As for his Oilers, the coach says this could be the year for a gold ball.
