Robinson's 500th win takes back seat

Philadelphia boys' basketball coach Keith Robinson was well on the way to enjoying his 500th career victory Friday night at PHS when his biggest fan suffered a stroke in the stands.
With the Tornadoes up by 10 points with approximately four minutes remaining in the Division 5-3A game with Carthage, Robinson's father, Herman Robinson, suffered a light stroke.
The elder Robinson coached at New Hope High School and East Central Community College during his long coaching career.
Although Keith Robinson had left to go to the hospital in Philadelphia to be with his dad, the Tornadoes eventually won the game in overtime.

Academy 3-A brackets set
The brackets for the upcoming Academy 3-A Tournament, which will be played at Central Academy in Macon, were drawn up Sunday afternoon.
On the girls' side, Heidelberg Academy takes on Newton County Academy on Feb. 5 at 4 p.m. The winner will meet top-seeded Kemper Academy in the semifinals on Feb. 8. The other Feb. 5 first-round girls' game has Sylva-Bay Academy taking on Central Academy at 7 p.m. with the winner to face Wayne Academy in a Feb. 8 semifinal. The finals and consolation games are slated for Feb. 9 with the top four teams advancing to the Class A Central State Regional Tournament at Kemper Academy, Feb. 11-16.
On the boys' side, Kemper meets Sylva-Bay on Feb. 5 at 5:30 p.m. with the winner to get top-seeded Heidelberg on Feb. 8. The other opening-round matchup on Feb. 5 has Newton County Academy squaring off with Central at 8:30. That winner will play Wayne in the Feb. 8 semifinals.

Etheridge, Jordan lead PA
Chasity Etheridge and May Jordan are girls' and boys' basketball scoring leaders for Patrician Academy. Through 14 games, Etheridge was averaging 13.8 points for the Lady Saints. She also had a team-best 8.2 rebounds.
Brooke Norris led the PA girls in assists with 5.8 and steals with 2.5 per game.
Jordan led the Saints in scoring with a 15.8 clip through 16 games. He was shooting 36.1 percent from 3-point range and had made 78.1 percent of his free throws.
Also scoring in double figures for the PA boys was Campbell Hunter with 11.3 ppg. Hunter led the Saints in rebounds with 7.3.

Brookhaven faring well
Both the boys' and girls' basketball teams at Brookhaven High School have fared well this season. The Panthers were 16-4 after losing in overtime to McComb in the finals of the Brookhaven Wal-Mart Invitational Tournament.
The Lady Panthers beat Crystal Springs in the finals to improve to 20-1.

Brown sets Trinity record
In their 134-73 beating of Ben's Ford last week, the Trinity Episcopal Saints got a school-record nine 3-pointers from sophomore Chase Brown.
The Saints, 14-4, avenged an earlier District 5-A loss to the Eagles. That defeat was Trinity's first league loss in four years.

You can all go home now
East Rankin Academy's 6-foot-6 junior center Steven Boozer put a quick end to his team's game at University Christian School recently when he shattered the backboard with a two-handed dunk just two minutes into the contest.
That prompted Leake Academy coach Phil Shepard, whose team played at ERA Friday and will host the Academy 3-AA and AA South State Tournaments in which Boozer will play, to say, "I'm going to tell him if he breaks our backboard, he's bought it. We don't have another one."

Brookhaven's McCreary gets 100th win
Brookhaven boys' soccer coach Rob McCreary recently got his 100th career victory as the Panthers beat McComb Tuesday to clinch the Division 6-4A championship for the third straight year.

Tupelo boys tough in soccer
The Tupelo boys' soccer program is the tops in Northeast Mississippi as the Golden Wave recently clinched their 14th consecutive division championship.

Paint, what paint?
In their Jan. 22 contest at Natchez, the Adams County Christian School Rebels and Centreville Academy Tigers combined to shoot 53 3-point baskets.
Not that they shot that well, however.
The Rebels were just 6-for-29 from behind the arc, while the Tigers fared little better in making 7-of-24 long-range tries.
ACCS won 55-41.

Hattiesburg looking for AD
Hattiesburg High School has decided it needs a full-time athletic director after all. The school district has been without a full-time AD since the position was vacated when former AD Allen Brice resigned on March 30, 2001, after being investigated by the State Auditor's Office for mismanaging department funds.
Brice was ordered by force of a demand letter from the auditor's office to repay $13,392.
Among those interested is Hattiesburg boys' basketball coach Yama Jones.

Rain ends Trinity's season
Trinity Episcopal's first season of high school soccer ended Tuesday when rain caused field conditions at Hattiesburg to deteriorate with 10 minutes remaining.
The Saints were tied at 2-2 with Presbyterian Christian. They finished the season with a 2-6-1 mark.
