Eagle golf coach Lou Hart added to the plethora of talent already in place at Meridian Community College on Wednesday as she signed local standout Daniel Boles. Boles, a senior at Clarkdale High School, finished last spring as the MHSAA Class 2A State runner-up and also claimed seven medalist honors.
Mike Tyson isn't on the card, but local boxing promoter David McNeil thinks he's put together quite a line-up for local boxing fans. Thank goodness, it's one which involves no ear-biting or pay-per-view television. McNeil and Budweiser have teamed up to bring Brawlin' at the Frank back to Meridian, with a full night of boxing slated for the Frank Cochran Center at Highland Park on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

NEWTON There's simply no doubt about it. Union High School's Yellow Jackets have Newton High's number this season. Tommy Doby scored 17 points to lead three Bulldogs in double figures Friday night as Enterprise High defeated Stringer 65-41 in boys prep basketball action. Jon Chancellor finished with 16 points, while Teague Burchfield added 12. The Bulldogs improved to 12-6 with the win.

QUITMAN For Quitman, a 20-point late third quarter lead over Northeast Jones proved to be as secure as a Charles Keating savings and loan Friday night. With 11 minutes to play, Quitman had a money-in-the-bank 49-29 margin over the visiting Tigers from Jones County. At the 47 second mark in the final period, the Panthers' edge had slipped to 65-62. Only a flurry of Panther free throws kept Northeast Jones from an amazing comeback and gave Quitman a 69-65 win plus the number one seed in its district for tournament play next month.
Two short guards stood in the way of the Lamar Raiders Friday night. and in the end, the two-man team wasn't enough. Lamar bested visiting East Holmes and their guards Chris Hathcock and Jay Jenkins 64-56, improving its mark to 13-4 on the year.
