PHILADELPHIA There's magic inside the gymnasium at Choctaw Central High School. and maybe, there's just a little Chantay Frazier. Frazier, an eighth-grader, took the ball nearly the length of the floor and knocked down a short jumper as time expired Friday night leading the host Lady Warriors to a breath-taking 55-53 win over West Lauderdale.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. Former NFL player Rae Carruth was acquitted of first-degree murder but convicted of conspiracy and two other charges Friday in the fatal shooting of his pregnant girlfriend. Carruth was spared the death penalty but could get as much as 20 years in prison for conspiracy to commit murder.

HONOLULU For a punter, Andy Russ isn't such a bad kicker. The Mississippi State punter had not kicked a field goal since his days at Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tenn. On Sunday, Russ booted a Hula Bowl-record four field goalst to give the South team a 26-13 victory over the North in the final college football game of the season and possibly the final game for Lou Holtz, who ended his 11-year career at Notre Dame by coaching the North.
HATTIESBURG Nedra Hosey hit 10 or her 12 shots from the field, including a stretch of nine straight at one point, to lead the Southern Miss Lady Eagles to a 77-59 Conference USA victory over South Florida. Hosey's 23 points moved her to seventh on the all-time Southern Miss scoring list. She has now scored 1,412 in her career.

PITTSBURGH, Pa. The Pittsburgh Steelers will name Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator Bill Cowher as their new coach Tuesday, according to a published report. Steelers president Dan Rooney chose Cowher Sunday over Dallsa Cowboys defensive coordinator Dave Wannstedt, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported in today's editions.
CINCINNATI Barry Larkin couldn't believe what he was hearing. Agent Eric Goldschmidt was telling him by telephone Saturday night that the Cincinnati Reds were willing to pay the shortstop $25.6 million over the next five years. That's right more that $5 million a year, making Larkin the fifth-highest paid player in the major leagues.

John Williams of LSU recorded 20 rebounds in a game against Florida in 1986. In 1995, former Quitman High School standout Antonio McDyess tied the mark against Arkansas.
Sports Faces …
Amy Davis
Thanks to her husband's gung-ho nature, Amy Davis has found an enjoyable role to play in athletics. Davis is the secretary officer for the Meridian Athletic Association.
Davis had a good year competiting in the MAA's 2001 events placing 11th among the club's female athletes. MAA athletes are awarded points for their performance in running, cycling and swimming events.
Davis says the Meridian Athletic Association helps keep her motivated.
