A little courtesy, please
To the editor:
I was recently backing out of a parking space on 5th Street near Constitution Avenue. Anyone who parks on this street knows that you can't see anything when you're trying to back out, especially if you have a big truck or SUV parked next to you, and you have to back out very slowly.
I was halfway backed out into the street when an older lady came speeding down the street and started honking her horn and would not let me finish backing out. This happens quite often in that people, instead of letting a person back out of a parking space, come speeding down the street honking their horns.
Please, people, the next time you see someone trying to back out of a parking space, be a courteous driver and let them pull out. Also, people need to slow down on these city streets.

Clarke County workers the elite of the elite'
To the editor:
It has been my pleasure to work for the Burlington Industries' Stonewall Plant for the last 25 years. The workforce at this plant deserves the highest praise you can give someone. They have been caring, dedicated, hard working, and conscientious. Because of them this plant had one of the best reputations in the denim industry. It was the measuring stick for all denim plants.
Unfortunately, due to reasons beyond their control, they will no longer be employed. If another industry was looking for a place to locate I could testify that they could not find a better workforce than the one in Clarke County. I was proud to walk among this group. They were "the elite of the elite."

Time for parents to step to the plate
To the editor:
Okay, parents of area athletes, it is time for you to step to the plate. According an article in The Meridian Star, the MHSAA has plans to change the rules. While coaches can only do so much, the families of the athletes can help out. You can find the MHSAA Web site or go to the link on IHIGH.COM to see what is really going on.
True, there are probably some changes needed, but what they want to do is make deep cuts in the school gates, make you play fewer games and more tournaments all because they need a bigger piece of the pie.
Beg their pardon, but our school athletic programs have been cut to the gill. The parents already have to do a lot of fund-raising to help out whatever sport our children participate in. We do everything except buy uniforms. But sometimes even that is needed. They want to blame it on test scores!
Get real. Most athletes have higher GPA's than other students in the student body. Superintendents who want higher test scores, should do their jobs and hire better principals that make teachers do their jobs and not just hang around until retirement. Now days all that most principals want to do is keep everything calm, no ripples in the water.
Now it is time for them to step up to the plate. The athletes get cut enough. We don't come in your classroom and tell you how to run it. Don't come on our field, gyms and locker rooms and tell us what to do just because your budget is in the red. Stay out of our pockets.
So, come on parents, make that phone call, write that letter, sign that petition. Don't let the MHSAA take anything else away from a few chosen students. MHSAA can find another pocket to pick.
I can tell the Lauderdale County superintendent he better hope he is not one of the whiners!
