Meridian native named local postmaster

Two decades ago, Danny Swancey sat in the office of Meridian's postmaster, who gave him a job as a city mail carrier.
Today, just a day after his mentor and friend former Meridian postmaster Frank S. Kennedy was buried Swancey sits in the same office, at the same desk, looking at the same chair he occupied during that interview.
The appointment of Swancey, 46, as postmaster for east Mississippi and west Alabama became effective today. In the job, he will oversee 160 employees in Meridian, as well as the processing of all mail in the sectional center, which includes about 50 offices in Newton, Philadelphia, Waynesboro, Butler and York, Ala.
A Meridian native, Swancey served as a firefighter at Meridian's No. 2 fire station from 1974-80.
He has held several positions in the postal service during his carrier. In 1987, he became an account representative and, later that year, was named supervisor of delivery and collections.
He has served as a station manager in Brandon, supervisor of postal operations in Clinton, postmaster of Morton from 1990-96, postmaster of Crystal Springs from 1996-98 and postmaster of Brandon in 1998.
Swancey is married to the former Vashti Terry and they have six children. The family attends Northcrest Baptist Church and currently resides in Enterprise. He is the son of Martha Swancey of Meridian and Charles Swancey of Enterprise.
Swancey said he has now realized his goal.
