The level of competition will be high for the Meridian basketball teams during the next few weeks.
The Wildcats won at No. 9 Hattiesburg on Tuesday in triple overtime and will host No. 1 Columbus on Friday and No. 12 Starkville on Jan. 15 before taking on No. 2 Murrah at Terry on Jan. 19. The Wildcats host No. 4 Wayne County on Jan. 29 and travel to No. 12 Starkville on Feb. 1.
The Lady Wildcats host No. 5 Columbus on Friday, take on No. 1 Murrah on Jan. 19 at Terry, host No. 3 Wayne County on Jan. 29, and host No. 6 Provine on Feb. 9.

Ring up two for MPSA
Jackson Prep upheld the MPSA banner in a pair of basketball games with MHSAA member Florence on Monday.
The Prep girls won the opener 61-50, while the Prep boys posted a 63-34 blowout in the second game.
Florence's teams weren't exactly slouches. The Lady Eagles came in with a 9-4 record, while the Eagles were 11-1.
Prep visits Newton High School for a pair of games on Feb. 2.

Broiler Showcase set
Forest High School will host seven basketball games in the Broiler Showcase on Jan. 26.
Teams participating are the girls from Forest, Kosciusko, Newton, Union, Morton, Neshoba Central, Lake, and Choctaw Central.
Boys' teams include Forest, Choctaw Central, Kosciusko, Morton, Neshoba Central, and West Lauderdale.
Pairings will be announced at a later date.

Sumrall seeks head coach
Summrall High School in Lamar county is taking applications for a head football coach.
Those interested in applying should contact the superintendent's office at 1-601-794-1030 or the high school at 1-601-758-3559.
The deadline for applications is Feb. 14 at 3 p.m.,with the projected interview period running from Feb. 18-25. The Bobcats compete in Region 6-2A.

MHS faces top competition
The Meridian Wildcats may have gone 1-2 in their foray to the Zizzer Classic in Popular Bluff, Mo., but with the stout competition present at the eight-team affair, Wildcat head coach Ernie Watson was pleased.
The two out of state tournaments left the Wildcats with an 10-7 record heading into the 2002 portion of their schedule.

Tournament sites announced
Among the sites selected for upcoming MHSAA division tournaments are Meridian (2-5A), Magee (5-4A), Noxubee County (2-4A), Heidelberg (5-3A), Forest (6-3A), Williams-Sullivan (5-2A), Bassfield (7-2A), and Union (6-1A).
MPSA district tournament hosts will be Central Academy (3-A) and Leake Academy (3-AA).
Kemper Academy will host the Central State A Tournament, while Leake will host the AA South State Tournament.

Just how big is soccer?
Among area MHSAA members, nine schools field boys' soccer teams. They are Meridian and Wayne County in Class 5A, Northeast Lauderdale and Neshoba Central in Class 4A, and West Lauderdale, Philadelphia, Newton County, Southeast Lauderdale, and Clarkdale in Class 1A-2A-3A.
On the girls' side, only five schools field soccer teams. Meridian and Wayne County in 5A, Northeast Lauderdale in 4A, and Newton County and Clarkdale in 1A-2A-3A.
Lamar is the only area MPSA school that competes in soccer.

Former players now coaching
Among the former college basketball players who now coach high school teams that have played in the area recently are David Midlick, who coaches both the boys and girls at Washington School, and Al Perry, who coaches the Pearl Pirates.
Midlick played at Ole Miss in the 1990s, while Perry played at Mississippi State in the late 1970s.
State players must be popular in Rankin County as former Bulldog Greg Carter leads the Brandon Bulldogs.
