Lauderdale County Tax Assessor Jimmy Slay wants a new vehicle for his department.
Slay asked the board of supervisors during a work session this week to consider replacing his department's 10-year-old Chevrolet Blazer S-10.
Slay said a new vehicle would ensure that his employees have reliable and safe transportation when driving in the county to appraise property.
District 5 Supervisor Ray Boswell, though, said that the county should keep a careful eye on purchasing vehicles. He said he is against departments getting newer vehicles "to feel good."
Boswell said he does not oppose Slay's request; he said he just wanted to express his concerns.
Slay said the new vehicle would not be taken home by county employees and would be used for business. "They need something to drive that they will be safe and not have problems," Slay said.
