FOREST – Once she found out how to get on the basketball team back in junior high, Scott Central senior Britney Burks has done quite well.
Burks scored her 2,000th career point in a 46-45 loss at Forest on Dec. 17. That's a long way from her seventh grade year when she didn't know if she was good enough to be on the squad.
Burks offered her reason behind not signing up in her younger days.
Harrison, whose coaching idol is Bobby Knight, has no doubts as to her abilities on the court.
Burks' accomplishments aren't limited to basketball.
She is a member of the Beta Club, student council, and was selected class favorite at SCHS. She's an A and B student in the classroom.
Her smarts come into play on the court as well. She's been named to the all-state tournament team as a sophomore, the Mississippi Association of Coaches all-state team as a sophomore and junior, was all-division three times, and was Scott Central's MVP last season.
The Lady Rebels won the Class 1A state championship her sophomore year en route to a 31-7 season.
As a junior, Burks was part of a 24-12 squad that was eliminated in the first round of the state playoffs.
She's been versatile enough to play all five positions.
While reaching 2,000 points in a career is quite a milestone for a high school athlete, Harrison knows she could have racked up a lot more if she was just a little bit greedy.
Burks has been recruited by Jackson State, West Alabama, and a couple of other smaller schools, but she plans to attend East Central Community College for two years.
In the meanwhile, there's the rest of the 2001-2002 season to tend to.
