Jana Sylvera of Meridian is The Radio People Scholar at Meridian Community College for the fall semester. WOKK Radio funds the $750 scholarship through The MCC Foundation.
Originally from Dallas, Sylvera is a broadcast communications major. She is the executive producer of the campus news show at the college, in addition to holding part-time jobs at two radio stations. A sophomore, she wants to pursue a disk jockey position after graduation.
Two 18-year-old freshmen at Meridian Community College are the 2001-2002 Nicholas Gianakos Scholars. Amber Marshall and Chad Nicholson have received $1,000 awards from a scholarship endowment established through The MCC Foundation by Kim Gianakos as a memorial tribute to her nephew.
Marshall is a graduate of West Lauderdale High School who is interested in preparing for a career as a nurse or radiologist. Nicholson, a graduate of Lamar High School, is studying English in the University Transfer Program and wants to become a writer. Both students hold part-time jobs.
Meridian Community College freshman Jo Anna Tucker, 18, wants to pursue a career in marketing and a full-tuition Bonita Lakes Mall Scholarship is helping her reach her goal. The $1,200 scholarship is funded by Bonita Lakes Mall through The MCC Foundation.
Tucker, a graduate of Meridian High School, is active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and works part-time at Winn-Dixie. She is studying in the University Transfer Program at the College.
Kassie Rowell of Vossburg is the newly selected recipient of the Mitchell Signs/Graphics Communication Scholarship at Meridian Community College. This $500 scholarship is funded annually by Manny Mitchell through The MCC Foundation.
Married and the mother of three children, Rowell is a freshman in the Graphics Communications Program. She is active in both the Art Students League and the Graphic Communication Technology Club.
SCOOBA The 2002 edition of "Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges" will include the names of 57 students from East Mississippi Community College who have been selected as outstanding campus leaders.
Students named this year from EMCC in the Meridian area are Morgan McPhail, Austyn Gordon, Scotty Elliott, Addy Clark, and Rocky Rockett.
Morgan, a political science major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark D. McPhail of Collinsville. At EMCC, she is a member of the softball team, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Student Christian Fellowship, and the Student Government Association. She is the recipient of the HEADWAE award, Top Academic Freshman Female Athlete, has been listed on the President's list, and National Dean's List, is a USA All American nominee, present of the FCA and SGA, Phi Theta Kappa vice president and was named Homecoming Queen for 2001.
Gordon, a business major, is the daughter of Perry and Candy Gordon. She is a member of the women's soccer team, softball team, was All State Soccer 2000, All Regional Soccer 2000, All State Softball 2000, Phi Theta Kappa, National Dean's List and President's List.
Elliott, an accounting major, is the son of Dr. Scott and Claudia Elliott. He is a member of the football team, newspaper staff, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Phi Theta Kappa. He is also on the President's List, and a USA Today Academic All American nominee.
Clark, a forestry major, is the daughter of Debbie Baker. She is the Forestry Club secretary and received the Forestry Award for Spring 2001.
Rockette, a business major, is the son of Joyce Bell and Rocky Rockette. He is a member of the football team, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and is an Academic All American.
Campus nomination committees and editors of the annual directory have included the names of these students based on their academic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities and potential for continued success.
They join an elite group of students from more than 1,400 institutions of higher learning in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign nations. Students have been honored in the annual directory since it was first published in 1966.
HATTIESBURG Jonathan Darrell Chancelor of Stonewall has been named as an All-American Collegiate Scholar by The United States Achievement Academy.
The USAA established the All-American Collegiate Award Program to offer recognition to superior students who excel in academic disciplines. The All-American Collegiate Scholars must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average. Only scholars selected by a school official or other qualified sponsor are accepted. The scholars are also eligible for other awards given by the USAA.
Chancelor attends The University of Southern Mississippi and was nominated by Dr. Jayne Perkins. Chancelor will appear in the "All-American Collegiate Yearbook" which is published nationally.
Chancelor is the son of Darrell and Susan Chancelor of Stonewall. His grandparents are Kathleen Heber and the late Harold Heber of Enterprise, and Margaret Chancelor and the late Wesley Chancelor of Stonewall.
