Powell Odie III expected many things from his graduation day at Meridian Community College, but receiving a $1 bill from the guest speaker wasn't one of them.
Odie, who graduated from MCC's associate degree nursing program, won the lottery as commencement speaker Paul Barrett illustrated a point.
Barrett, publisher of The Meridian Star, told the nearly 150 graduates to be prepared and take advantage of their opportunities.
As Odie discovered the $1 bill under his chair, Barrett asked the audience, "So! Was he lucky?"
Earlier in the day, Mississippi Lt. Gov. Amy Tuck addressed 120 graduates at Mississippi State University-Meridian Campus.
Tuck said Mississippi needs educated and involved people to help steer a clear course toward the future.
Tuck challenged the graduates to aim high and seek excellence.
