ENTERPRISE He may be the best player you've never heard of. But if Cory Boggan can keep posting big numbers, that may change.
Boggan is a 6-foot-5 senior guard for the Enterprise Bulldogs. Boggan is currently blistering area nets at a clip of 24.5 points per game.
People around Enterprise talk of a tall, white, lanky kid who can both shoot from outside the three-point line but can also dunk with ease.
Yet a couple of things have hindered Boggan becoming a bigger draw for college scouts.
First his team is so-so. They were 13-16 in his junior season and were put out last year by Division 7-2A favorite Bay Springs. The Bulldogs are currently 5-6.
Secondly, Boggan has not attended a college summer basketball camp. In these days when recruiting for talent begins in the eighth grade, it's hard to get noticed when you can't be seen.
Because of his scoring ability, Boggan draws special attention from his opponents.
Newton County head coach Johnny Slaughter saw first-hand how good Boggan can be.
Boggan does have some help inside with a pair of 6-foot-4 post players.
Being a tall, white kid on a basketball floor brings its share of abuse but Boggan says he can handle it.
Boggan is qualified academically. He sports a 3.3 grade-point average and has scored an 18 on the American College Test.
On Friday night, hoop fans will get a treat when Boggan matches up against Dandy Dozen guard Jason Forte of Bay Sprngs.
Boggan's lowest point total this season was a 13-point game against Slaughter's Cougars. "They were without their football players then," Slaughter adds.
Boggan's best game was a career high 41-point effort against Stringer. In that outing, he was 16-of-18 from the free throw line.
