A Meridian man remained in custody today after assaulting a clerk at the El Cheapos on Fifth Street, and attempting to rob the store.
Detective Deano Harper, a spokesman for the Meridian Police Department, said charges are expected later in the day and that the suspect's name cannot be released until that time.
Officers received a call shortly before 9 a.m. Tuesday from a person who was worried about the clerk at the store, Harper said.
Harper said the young black man was armed with a weapon, but didn't say what type. The female clerk was assaulted, he said.
Also on Tuesday, officers arrested Nicole McCree of Meridian and charged her with embezzlement. McCree was the apparent victim of an armed robbery outside O'Charley's Restaurant on Aug. 28.
Mcree remained in the Lauderdale County jail today on a $10,000 bond.
