Raiders win home opener

By By Ryan Satcher/The Meridian Star
Dec. 2, 2001
Tristan Howell got his first win as head coach of the Lamar Raiders with a home-opening win over Newton County Academy 46-38.
The Raiders outscored the visitors 15-6 in the second quarter and held on to the lead late in the game to improve to 1-1.
The Lady Raiders played solid defense and defeated Newton 53-30 in earlier action.
The Generals scored 19 fourth quarter points, but it was not enough as the Lamar boys made a few late free throws to hold on to the lead.
Daniel Harrison led the Raiders early as he scored eight points in the last three minutes of the first quarter to give Lamar an 11-9 lead.
Lamar would expand that lead in the second quarter. It got four second-quarter points from David Haggard and five points from Joe Bryant to help make the lead 26-15 at the half.
Newton scored only one field goal in the third and only scored one point in the last four minutes of the quarter. Wil Bean was the only offense for the Generals as he scored all four Newton points in the quarter. Lamar scored eight points to expand its lead to 34-19 at the end of the quarter.
Lamar kept its lead around 15 for most of the second half. Bryant hit a three-pointer with 5:19 left in the half to make the lead 38-23. Newton would not give up as it got four more points from Bean to make the score 41-30 with 2:18 to play. The Generals continued to pressure the Raiders and cut the lead to eight after a basket by David White with just over a minute left to play.
Eight would be as close as the Generals would get. Bryant made two free throws after an intentional foul on Newton and the Generals could not complete the comeback as they fell to the homestanding Raiders 46-38.
Lamar was led in scoring by Bryant's 11 points and 10 each from Haggard and Harrison. Bean led Newton with 20 points.
Lamar plays again when it visits Oak Hill on Tuesday while Newton hosts a tournament this week.

The Lady Raiders got great outside shooting from Myleia Shirley and played hard to get the win over Newton.
Shirley ended up with 19 points on the night, while Libby Huff led the inside scoring with 11 points.
Newton scored the first basket of the game when Cassie Cleveland hit a three-pointer just a few seconds into the game. Newton would not score again for another quarter. Lamar took advantage of the Newton scoring drought and got out to a 10-3 lead at the end of the first quarter.
The lead was 16-3 when Newton finally scored again with a three-pointer by Casey McMahan to end the scoreless streak with 6:15 left in the half. Newton would come back strong using five points from Andi Chesney and two more from McMahan to cut the lead to 18-13.
Shirley would hit a three-pointer with 10 seconds left to make the score 21-13 at the half.
Lamar played hard in the second half and increased its lead to as many as 17. Newton added four late points to cut the final score to 43-30.
Newton was led in scoring by McMahan and Cleveland who both had nine points on the night.
