Decision expected soon in Mississippi Power rate increase

East Mississippi residents who get their electricity from Mississippi Power Co. could learn today or Monday if they will pay higher rates next year.
Public Service Commissioner Michael Callahan said he and the other two commissioners have met throughout the week to discuss Mississippi Power's request for a 9.5 percent rate increase.
Callahan, who represents the Southern District on the three-man commission including Mississippi Power's home office in Gulfport declined to talk about the proposed rate increase. Mississippi Power filed a petition in August with the PSC, seeking a 9.5 percent rate increase. Commissioners have until Monday to approve or deny the rate increase.
Residential service for 1,000 kilowatt-hours now costs about $80 a month; a 9.5 percent increase would raise the price to $87.60 a month. Mississippi Power serves about 191,000 customers across Meridian and Southeast Mississippi.
