East Mississippi escapes damage from strong storms

By By Fredie Carmichael/The Meridian Star

Lauderdale County and surrounding areas escaped a wave of deadly thunderstorms and tornadoes that ripped through the state on Saturday.
But just barely. Meridian, Lauderdale County and other parts of East Mississippi were under severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings Saturday morning and afternoon.
National Weather Service officials in Jackson said none of the tornadoes touched ground in East Mississippi.
And Clarence Butler, Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency director, reported no problems. "It looks like we escaped with no damage," he said.
Doug Cramer, a National Weather Service meteorologist, said the severe weather was triggered by a strong low-pressure system and cold front that pushed through Mississippi.
