Youth doesn't slow Amis

DECATUR When you think of high school quarterbacks, you think of juniors or seniors playing the role. However, that does not seem to be the case at Newton County High School.
Freshman Colby Amis led the 11-1 Cougars to the third round of the Class 3A State playoffs, after being thrown into the starting position.
Amis has been a quarterback all his life, and he looks to none other than Brett Favre for guidance, and learning technique.
As Amis made his high school debut at starting quarterback, he lead his team to five straight wins, and a third-round playoff berth.
When Amis was named the starting quarterback, Newton County head coach Jeff Breland had all the faith in his freshman.
Amis had thrown the ball 33 times this year prior to Friday night, and 19 of those passes were hauled in by his Cougar teammates. However, Amis tossed his first interception of his high school career Friday night enroute to a 19-12 loss to Collins.
As the Cougars will start preparing for next season, one position will already be filled.
