The 2001 "Shop With a Cop" campaign begins Saturday, when the Kudzu Kings appear in concert at the Temple Theatre to benefit the Meridian Police Department's Benevolent Association.
The 7:30 p.m. concert in the theater ballroom is sponsored by B-93 "The Buzz," The Music Emporium and the Mitchell Distributing Co. Bud Lite Concert Series. Tickets are $10 and $25.
The Benevolent Association sponsors "Shop With a Cop," a program that is now in its fifth year and has helped purchase Christmas presents for hundreds of needy children.
Program helps children
The "Shop With a Cop" program selects children by an application process; all applications are approved by a committee. The program relies directly on the community for support.
The Kudzu Kings are natives of Oxford who play a unique blend of country, bluegrass and improvisational rock 'n' roll.
Al Brown from B 93 "The Buzz" described the band as "a mix of old Mississippi Blues and Blue Ridge Blue Grass, mixed in with a little Led Zeppelin and the Allman Brothers."
Saturday's concert is the last of this year's Bud Lite Concert Series.
Supporters set goal
The Kudzu Kings performed last year. Brown said they surpassed their $20,000 goal last year, raising $20,173. This year's goal is $30,000.
Brown hopes the concert will become a tradition.
