BROOKHAVEN Dominique Addison rushed for 107 yards and two touchdowns Friday night, leading the Bogue Chitto Bobcats to a hard-fought 13-7 win over the Union Yellowjackets in the first round of the Class 1A state playoffs.
Addison, a 6-foot, 210-pound senior, scored touchdowns on runs of 20 and six yards at Troy Smith Field.
Bogue Chitto, 11-1, advances to the second round and plays at Puckett Friday night. Union finished 6-6.
It was the third-straight playoff appearance for the Bobcats but the first on their home field and their first-ever playoff victory.
Union was making its first-ever state playoff appearance.
Addison said his offensive line was able to overpower Union on two long touchdown drives. The Bobcats went up 7-0 in the second quarter on a
20-yard touchdown run by Addison and Lindsey Jackson's PAT kick with 4:29 showing.
An interception of a Jody Blount pass by Bogue Chitto safety Michael Blackwell set up the nine-play, 56-yard scoring drive.
Union nearly scored late in the first half, marching to Bogue Chitto's 12 before time expired. Denard Ferguson intercepted Blount as time ran out.
Bogue Chitto's defense helped provide the impetus to score the Bobcats second touchdown. On fourth down at the Union 45, Blount was tackled for a 3-yard loss by Paul Martin.
Bogue Chitto took over and went 42 yards in seven plays to paydirt. Addison ran his left end, cut back and scored from six yards out. Union's Jeremy Hamm blocked the extra point try and Bogue Chitto led 13-0 with 1:16 left in the third frame.
The Jackets came to life on their next offensive series. Anthony Johnson returned the kickoff 24 yards to the Union 39, launching a 16-play, 61-yard scoring drive. Blount completed three passes and scored on a 1-yard sneak.
Quincy Patrick kicked the extra point and Union trailed 13-7 with 6:48 left in the game.
The Bobcats were able to maintain possession of the football and marched to the Union 28 before Bobcat quarterback Jacob Leggett was tackled on fourth down with only 29 seconds remaining in the game.
Blount completed 5-of-25 passes for 62 yards. Tony Warren caught 2 passes for 30 yards and Derrick Harris had two receptions for 24 yards.
Blount led the Jackets with 11 carries for 54 yards. Anthony Johnson rushed 14 times for 52 yards.
Union head coach Brad Breland was proud of his team. "Union has never been in the playoffs and this was a big step for us," Breland said. "Our seniors helped us reach a new level."
Breland said he was impressed by the Bobcats.
Bogue Chitto finished with 212 yards total offense, gaining 149 yards on the ground. Denard Ferguson rushed for 47 yards. Leggett completed 4-of-8 passes for 63 yards.
