MHS Forensics Team opens season with awards

The Meridian High School Wildcats Forensics Team brought home a number of awards during its first speech and debate tournament of the school year.
The forensics team opened its 2001-2002 season in Laurel at the Kux Invitational Speech and Debate Tournament, hosted by R.H. Watkins High School on Sept. 21 and 22. This season marks the second year of competition for the team, under the direction of Derrick Pouncy and Karen Bush.
The 11 team members in competition were: Mary Kathryn Covert, Amber Felton, Jerry Gordon, Katrina Jennings, Joseph Johnson, Brent McCarty, Anthony Meadows, Casey Newell, Erin Reynolds, Andrew Thomas and Brandy Torrence.
Taking home semifinalist honors were Andrew Thomas (Novice Extemporaneous Speaking), Jerry Gordon (Varsity Extemporaneous Speaking), Mary Kathryn Covert (TV Commentary), Brandy Torrence (Novice Prose Interpretation), Brent McCarty and Anthony Meadows (Duet Acting), and Mary Kathryn Covert and Brent McCarty (Duo Interpretation).
The Wildcat forensics team also took home trophies and championships in the following categories: Mary Kathryn Covert (6th Place in TV Commentary), Andrew Thomas (5th Place in Novice Extemporaneous Speaking), Brent McCarty and Anthony Meadows (5th Place in Duet Acting), and Mary Kathryn Covert and Brent McCarty (1st Place in Duo Interpretation).
The team is scheduled to compete today at St. Andrew's Episcopal School in Jackson.
