Drug busts net 17 arrests, more expected today

A six-month undercover operation by the East Mississippi Drug Task Force resulted Wednesday in the arrests of 17 people.
Two more people are on investigative hold and more charges are expected, said Lauderdale County Sheriff Billy Sollie.
Sollie said agents with the EMDTF, headed by Maj. Steve Spears, began making arrests shortly after lunch on Wednesday. They worked late into the evening, bringing suspects into the Lauderdale County Detention Facility for booking.
All of the charges stem from possession and sales of cocaine, crack cocaine, ecstasy and marijuana. The majority of cases were based on sales to undercover agents, Sollie said.
Sollie said the agents will work throughout the rest of the week. About 20 more arrests are expected, he said.
Meanwhile, a Lisman, Ala., man has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault in connection with the shooting late Friday night of two Lauderdale County residents.
Darren Grant, 31, of Route 1, Lisman, is also charged with shooting into an occupied dwelling. He is being held in the Lauderdale County Detention Facility on $125,000 bond.
Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell said Grant allegedly got involved in an argument with an former girlfriend late Friday at Club Pisces on Water Valley Road.
Grant was ordered by security guards to leave the club, and later began firing at the club with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, Mitchell said. A woman was shot in the thigh, and a man was struck in the foot, he said. Both victims were not involved in the earlier argument, Mitchell said. They were transported to local hospitals and are now recovering at home.
Grant was taken into custody by Sheriff Donald Lolley of Choctaw County, Ala. He has waived extradition and is expected to be returned to Lauderdale County today, Mitchell said.
