Firefighters teach lessons on fire safety to West Lauderdale Elementary students

Volunteer firefighters visited West Lauderdale Elementary School on Wednesday to teach children about fire safety and prevention.
Firefighters from Bailey, Collinsville, Martin, and West Lauderdale were at the school in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week.
The Clarkdale Volunteer Fire Department planned a similar event at Clarkdale Elementary School today.
Al Minyard, chief of the Martin Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, said a variety of information was disseminated to West Lauderdale students, including advice to call 911 in an emergency, get out of the house if it is on fire and don't be afraid of firemen.
Minyard said young children die every year in house fires because they seek out their favorite hiding places instead of trying to escape danger.
Firefighter Chuck Stewart of the Bailey Volunteer Fire Department was dressed in full gear so the students would know what to expect if they meet up with a fireman during an emergency.
The students were also given coloring books and literature on fire safety published by the United States Fire Administration. Some students got a close up look at equipment on a fire truck.
Also assisting in the presentations were firefighter Michael Godwin and Emergency Medical Responder Melanie Hogan, both volunteers with the Martin department.
