The Four Tops in concert Saturday

By By Penny Randall/The Meridian Star
Oct. 12, 2001
One of the nation's most popular and honored rhythm and blues groups will appear in concert Saturday at the Silver Star Hotel and Casino.
The Four Tops kicks off its show at 8 p.m. in the Silver Star Conference Center.
The Four Tops have been thrilling audiences with their unique blend of vocals and harmonies since the mid-1950s. The Silver Star performance marks the first time the group has performed at the casino resort.
The Four Tops formed in Detroit in 1953 by lead singer Levi Stubbs Jr., Renaldo "Obie" Benson, Lawrence Payton, who died in 1997, and Abdul "Duke" Fakir while all were still in high school. They recorded for several labels before signing with Motown in 1963.
Theo Peoples is now the fourth member of the group, replacing the late Payton.
Blockbuster hits like "Baby, I Need Your Lovin'," "I Can't Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)" and "Reach Out, I'll Be There" topped the charts and became anthems of a generation.
The group was a sensation abroad as well. At a time when the Beatles and the Rolling Stones dominated the U.S. charts, The Four Tops sat like kings at No. 1 in England.
In the early 1980s, The Four Tops recorded two albums that featured such monster hits as "When She Was My Girl," "Tonight I'm Gonna Love You All Over" and "I Believe in You and Me."
In 1990, The Tops were inducted into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame. In 1997, they were honored with a star on Hollywood Boulevard. And in 1999, they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame.
Ticket prices are $17.50, $20 and $25 for limited VIP seating. Tickets may be charged by phone or purchased at the Silver Star Box Office. All tickets are non-refundable. Anyone attending must be 21 years or older.
The Silver Star Conference Center is a non-smoking site.
