Gunman robs El Cheapos

By By Marianne Todd/The Meridian Star
Sept. 26, 2001
Meridian police are searching for a gunman who robbed an El Cheapos Discount Beer &Tobacco House convenience store clerk about 9:30 Tuesday evening.
Meridian police spokesman Lt. Wade Johnson said the gunman entered the 5101 Fifth St. store, brandished a gun and demanded money. Johnson said the man fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash toward Fifth Street, north of the store.
The gunman is described as a black man with a light complexion, 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall, and weighing about 125 pounds. He was wearing a dark hooded jogging jacket, dark pants and a red and white bandanna draped across his face.
Johnson said while bandannas can be indicative of gang activity, the use of one during a robbery doesn't necessarily point to a gang.
The El Cheapos robbery was the latest in a growing number of armed robberies and attempted armed robberies in Meridian in recent months.
Residents with information can call CrimeStoppers at 485-1860.
