Lady Cougars blank Neshoba

PHILADELPHIA – For the second time in as many meetings this season, the Newton County Lady Cougars claimed a 10-0 victory over Neshoba Central.
Newton County improved to 13-2 with Monday's win, while Neshoba Central fell to 8-10.
Suzanne Chaney (13-2) tossed a two-hitter for her sixth shutout in 15 games.
Newton County hammered 14 hits in the win and received seven walks in the first three innings off losing pitcher Lindsey Smith.
Newton County got two runs in the top of the first inning on a two-run single by Shelly Ferguson. Two walks and an error led to the quick start.
Lauren Barrett ripped a two-run double to the wall in the second frame as the Lady Cougars took a 4-0 lead. The Lady Cougars received two more walks in that inning.
Newton County added three more runs in the top of the third with three walks and an RBI-single by Holly Jackson leading to the damage.
The Lady Cougars made it 10-0 with three more runs in the top of the fourth. Ferguson and Dominique Mapp both had RBI-singles with another run coming home on a throwing error.
Ferguson made a spectacular leaping over-the shoulder catch in left field to end the game, robbing Sarah Williamson of extra bases.
Neshoba Central's lone hits were singles by Alana Moore and Lee Smith.
Kristin Chaney, Suzanne Chaney, Ferguson and Krystal Burton each had two hits for Newton County with Jackson and Jessica Sheehan both having a single in the No. 10 position in the lineup.
Both teams return to action today with Newton County hosting Heidelberg for a 7 p.m. Region 5-3A contest and Neshoba Central traveling to Noxubee County for a Region 2-4A matchup at 5:30 p.m.
