The International Singing Brakeman's Association will celebrate Jimmie Rodgers' birthday today from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Best Western Hospitality Room.

Thursday is Grant Application Day
Meridian Council for the Arts has set Thursday as Grant Application Day. Community Arts Grants applications will be available in the Meridian Council for the Arts office on the third floor of City Hall. Completed applications must be turned in by Oct. 5

Make-A-Wish Foundation to meet in Meridian
The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Mississippi has set its monthly Meridian volunteer luncheon from 11:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday in the sixth-floor board room of Rush Medical Group.
Lynn Conerly, volunteer coordinator, must receive reservations for the luncheon by Wednesday. She can be reached at 800-819-4072.
Make-A-Wish Foundation of Mississippi is a nonprofit organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses.
Saddle Club to meet
The Bonita Lakes Saddle Club will meet at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lauderdale County Agriculture Center. Items for discussion will include the AQHA Ride on Sept. 22-23 and the Fall Trail Ride scheduled for Nov. 3.

Freedom From Smoking' Clinic
The Partnership for a Healthy Lauderdale County will offer a "Freedom From Smoking" Clinic at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, 806 Highway 19 North, Suite 385 (College Park Shopping Center).
The clinic format consists of seven, one-hour sessions. The cost is $40.

Benefit singing for Richard Whitehead
A benefit gospel singing, featuring the "4 Praise Quartet" from Ethel, is set for Sept. 15 at 7 p.m. at Smith Chapel Church of God of Prophecy.
The event is a fund-raiser for Richard L. Whitehead, who has had both of his kidneys removed. Whitehead has been out of work for six months and is currently waiting for a kidney transplant.
The church is on Highway 491, north of Collinsville. To donate to his medical expense fund, call Hazel Purvis at (601) 986-8501.
Brother's Keeper in concert
Brother's Keeper will be in concert at Bonita Lakes Mall at 7 p.m. on Sept. 20. The concert will be held on the vacant lot between Great Southern National Bank and O'Charley's Restaurant &Lounge. Admission is one canned good, which will be donated to a local charity.
Annual Bird Fair in Jackson
The eighth annual Bird Fair, hosted by the Central Mississippi Bird Club will host its eighth annual Bird Fair on Sept. 22 and 23 at the Jackson Fairgrounds Complex Agriculture Building. The event will last from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sept. 22 and from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Sept. 23.
Birds will include, Amazons, macaws, cockatoos, canaries, parakeets and other exotic birds.
Canoe clinic in Hattiesburg
The Mississippi Canoe and Kayak Club will have a beginning and intermediate canoe clinic Sept. 22 on Okatoma Creek near Hattiesburg. Participants will learn the fundamental canoe strokes and maneuvers, safety and rescue techniques and other important information.
The course is limited to 12 people at $10 each for club members and $45 each for non-members. Pre-registration is required. For information, contact Larry Estes at (601) 924-3689.
Pecan Festival set for September
The Mississippi Pecan Festival is taking applications for arts and crafts booths at this year's festival. The 15th annual Festival will be Sept. 29-30 in Richton. To reserve booth space, call (601) 525-3792 or (601) 964-8201.
Alzheimer's Walk set for Oct. 6
The Alzheimer's Memory Walk is set for Oct. 6 at Bonita Lakes, with registration at 8:15 a.m. and the actual walk starting at 9. Participating counties include: Clarke, Jasper, Kemper, Lauderdale, Leake, Neshoba, Newton, Scott and Smith. For information, call 483-4720 or 484-6180.
