Area teams tune up in jamboree

MADDEN – Ten Mississippi Private School Association members got a final tuneup for the 2001 football season with a 10-game jamboree at Leake Academy Thursday.
Each of the 10 games consisted of one 12-minute quarter.
In the afternoon's opener, University Christian defeated Newton County Academy 6-0. The Generals of NCA have a new head coach this fall in William Brian Sims.
The second contest saw 2000 Academy AAA state runner-up Manchester Academy slip past Oak Hill 7-6.
Newton County Academy also lost in the third matchup of the day as Central Hinds rolled to a 20-0 win.
University Christian blanked Manchester 6-0 in the fourth game.
Oak Hill shut out Central Hinds 7-0 in the fifth contest.
Defending Academy AA state champion Winston Academy defeated Canton Academy 7-0 in the sixth matchup. The Patriots have a new head coach this fall in former East Central Community College assistant coach Steve Kelly as they begin their quest for a fifth-straight state championship.
The host Rebels of Leake Academy used a late stop deep in their territory in the final minute of their battle with Madison-Ridgeland Academy to preserve a 0-0 stalemate. The Rebels are led by second-year head coach Bobby Madden.
Tri-County Academy got a 23-yard field goal in the closing seconds to shock Winston Academy 9-7 in the eighth game.
Canton Academy silenced MRA 6-0 in the ninth matchup.
In the nightcap, the Leake Rebels posted a 7-0 win over Tri-County.
Regular season play begins next week. Newton County Academy hosts Central Holmes on Aug. 31. Leake will play host to Central Academy of Macon that same night. Also playing at home next Friday is Winston, which will host Heritage Academy.
Tonight
The prep football season kicks off tonight in Butler when Patrician Academy hosts South Choctaw. Kickoff is at 7:30.
