Former Eagles win club titles at Union, Decatu

Former Meridian Community College golfers Dan Luke of Hickory and Bo Welch of Luke won club championships at Decatur and Union, respectively, in recent days.
Luke shot a 65-68, seven-under par 133 to win the Decatur Country Club championship by six strokes over Chris Clark.
Welch shot a 68-73 for a three-under par 141 to win the Union Golf Club championship by three strokes over Terry Sessums. Jonathan Winstead, a member of the Union High School golf team, took third place with a 74-72-146.
The round of the tournament went to Jody Blount, a junior at Union High School, as he shot a five-under-par 67 in the second day of competition in winning the first flight.
Smith-Calhoun take Philly Four-Ball: The team of Kent Smith and David Calhoun of Oxford shot a 66-64-130 to win the 26th-annual Philadelphia Four-Ball Tournament this past weekend by two strokes over the team of Joel Nelson and Steve Nelson of Newton.
Third place went to Sean Covich and Benji Carpenter of Meridian with a 67-68-135.
In fourth place was the team of Terry Sessums and Neil Pettigrew with a 68-69-137.
Neil Chandler and Mike Botwell won the first flight with a 69-65-134 that was leading the tournament overall until the final two teams completed their round.
Frankie Wagner Benefit set for Sept. 21: A benefit tournament for Frankie Wagner will be held on Sept. 21 at Briarwood Country Club.
Entry fee for the four-person scramble is $400 per team or $100 per person. Entry fee includes dinner and the opportunity for door prizes.
The first 25 teams to enter will be accepted.
Checks may be made payable to: Frankie Wagner Cancer Fund and mailed to Briarwood Country Club, Box 3250, Meridian, MS 39303 or turned in at the pro shop at Briarwood. Donations can be made at any Citizens National Bank.

Just around the corner: Lakeview Golf Course will host a tournament to help the Clarkdale cheerleaders raise money for their trip to Nationals on Aug. 25. The event will be a three-person scramble and the entry fee is $90 per team or $30 per person. This includes lunch and green fees. The Labor Day weekend will be a big one in Meridian as Briarwood Country Club will host the Harry Lackey Labor Day Four-Ball Tournament and Northwood Country Club will host its annual Labor Day Invitational. Both tournaments will run Sept. 1-3.
In the Harry Lackey Tournament, the entry fee is $200 per team for both members and non-members. The event will be flighted after the Sept. 1 round. The deadline to enter is Aug. 24. For more information, contact Briarwood pro Rob McGraw at 601-681-6185.

Newton County Club will host a two-person select tournament on Sept. 2-3. Entry fee is $25 per person with tee times at 1:30 p.m. both days.
