USM feels bite of injury bug; Sherrill pleased with practice

The Rebel offense generated 211 yards in 56 plays, scoring a pair of touchdowns. Senior running back Joe Gunn scored on a 20-yard rush on his first carry of the day, and junior quarterback David Morris hooked up with redshirt freshman wide receiver Trey Fryfogle on a 15-yard pass for the other score.
Gunn led the way on the ground with 36 yards on five carries, as the offense netted 94 yards on 27 carries.
Ole Miss used four quarterbacks during the scrimmage, combining for 117 yards on 12-of-29 passing with one TD and no interceptions. Morris was 5-of-10 for 56 yards with a TD, while sophomore Eli Manning completed 5-of-11 for 23 yards. Freshman Seth Smith hit fellow freshman Taye Biddle for a 35-yard pickup as Smith finished 1-of-5, and fellow freshman Mitchell Spurlock was 1-of-3 for three yards.
Fryfogle, redshirt freshman tight end Bo Hartsfield and junior running back Toward Sanford caught two passes each. Fryfogle gained 28 yards on his two catches, while Hartsfield and Sanford each gained 13 yards.
Defensive backs Travis Blanchard and Marcus Woodson spearheaded the defense's effort. Blanchard recorded a game-high five hits, while Woodson recorded four tackles and had one pass break-up.
Two-a-days for Rebels will continue on Thursday, and Ole Miss will host the annual "Meet The Rebels Day on Saturday at 1 p.m., in The Grove.

Delta State
CLEVELAND The battle to see who will backup starting quarterback Josh Bright started taking shape during Delta State University's third day of summer practice here Wednesday afternoon.
First-year offensive coordinator Cody Gross is pleased with the progress of the three quarterback battle. Chad Blalack and Brian Bell are the most experienced of the quarterbacks, having taken the majority of snaps during spring drills with the Statesmen. True freshman Spencer Johnson from Kentucky has also made good progress to push into the mix.
The three quarterbacks have been going head-to-head and Gross feels that it is too early to decide who will be second and third team.
Delta State head coach Steve Campbell is happy with the overall practices so far.
Delta State will scrimmage this Saturday afternoon at Parker Field. Kickoff is slated for 3:30.
Alabama
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. University of Alabama football coach Dennis Franchione put his team through an 82-play scrimmage Wednesday morning, the first of three scrimmages prior to the Sept. 1 kickoff against UCLA.
The scrimmage was carefully scripted by the Tide coaches, but Franchione saw several bright spots. Tailback Santonio Beard rushed for 44 yards on seven carries, while Ahmaad Galloway had 35 yards on six carries. Ray Hudson had three carries for 21 yards and freshman Marquez Dupree had three rushes for 21 yards and a touchdown.
Senior Andrew Zow led the quarterbacks with 6-of-14 passing for 52 yards and one TD. Tyler Watts was 3-of-9 for 27, while Brodie Croyle was 3-for-3 for 14 yards and Jonathan Richey was 2-for-2 for 8 yards.
Tight end Terry Jones, Jr., was the leading receiver, catching 3 passes for 39 yards, including a 20 yards touchdown. Antonio Carter had 3 receptions for 27 yards, while Freddie Milons caught 2 for 10 yards and Brandon Brooks 2 for 7 yards.
Franchione had the players back for an evening practice Wednesday night.
The Tide continues two-a-day practices through Aug. 21, while the first day of class is Aug. 22.
