Keith Peavy and Cym Doggett of Jackson, Ala., closed with four straight birdies to win the rain-shortened 15th-annual Mixed Scramble at Briarwood Country Club by two strokes Sunday afternoon.
After Saturday's round was washed out, the tournament was shortened into an 18-hole event and Peavy and Doggett came away with birdies on nine of their holes to finish with a nine-under par 63.
Starting their round on No.1, Peavy and Doggett birdied Nos. 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8 to make the turn at five-under par.
After five straight pars to open the back nine, they closed with birdies on Nos. 15, 16, 17, and 18 to post a two-stroke win over the team of Chris Shelly and Sharon Alexander.
Shelly and Alexander began their round on No. 16 and promptly birdied the par-3. After three pars, they birdied No. 2. A birdie on No. 4 and two others at No. 7 and 8 had them five-under through 11 holes.
They took a bogey on No. 9 to drop to four-under. Birdies on Nos. 10, 12, and 13 got Shelly and Alexander to seven-under par, but a bogey on No. 14 effectively ended their hopes of winning the tournament. They closed with a birdie on No. 15 to finish at seven-under with a 65.
Third place went to the team of Lee West and Nancy West with a six-under par 66. They had six birdies and avoided bogey. Starting on No. 11, they birdied Nos. 15, 17, 2, 4, 5, and 7.
Three teams shot 67 with the duo of Fred McKey and Julia McKey taking fourth place on a scorecard playoff. They had five birdies and no bogeys. They birdies Nos. 1, 10, 12, 15, and 17.
Also shooting 67 were the teams of Mike Carmichael-Amanda Carmichael and Joel Nelson-Mary Beth Nelson.
The Carmichaels had five birdies and no bogeys. They got birdies on Nos. 4, 8, 12, 13, and 16.
The Nelsons also had five birdies without a bogey with four of their birdies coming on the front nine. They birdied Nos. 1, 2, 4, 8, and 11 before closing with seven straight pars.
Also in the championship flight with 68s were the teams of Byron Davis-Marlene Davis and J.T. Williamson-Leigh Phillips with Gary Yarborough and Carol Yarborough shooting a 69 for the final spot in the championship flight.
