After being rained out of a preseason classic this weekend, the Meridian High girls opened their softball season with a 11-0 win over Quitman High Tuesday night.
The first half of the game seemed to be a defensive struggle. Quitman twice loaded the bases, only to be denied any runs by a tough Lady Wildcat defensive effort led by pitcher Laura Bowles.
Meridian scored one run in the first inning with senior Stephanie Nelson nailing a hard hit to left field for a single and one RBI.
Runs trickled in as Meridian's Ashley Brown got a single with an RBI in the third inning. Another run walked in during the fifth inning.
The sixth inning was an offensive awakening for the Lady Cats as Valerie Sherman and Bowles both hit singles that brought in a run.
This was followed by an impressive hitting spree. Meridian's Ashley Brown nailed a double with two RBI back-to-back, while team leader Eron Hodgins smacked a single with 2 RBI's. The sixth inning effort closed out as Meridian's Raven Williams doubled in two runs.
Meridian, now 1-0 on the season, visits Choctaw Central Thursday. The 1-1 Lady Panthers of Quitman host Newton Thursday.
