Meridian soaked by remnants of Tropical Storm Barry

By By Fredie Carmichael/The Meridian Star
Aug. 12, 2001
Slow-moving storms dropped 11/2 inches of rain in the Meridian area Saturday morning, swelling creeks and canceling several sporting events.
A forecaster for the National Weather Service in Jackson said Tropical Storm Barry may have blown itself out last week but it left Mississippi and Alabama under a large tropical air mass that is producing precipitation this weekend.
A pair of softball tournaments at Clarkdale Attendance Center and Southeast Lauderdale High School were canceled, as well as golf tournaments at Northwood and Briarwood country clubs.
That rain prompted Coach Ryan Miller to cancel the Preseason Classic softball tournament that was to be held at Southeast's field.
Miller said fresh dirt was brought in Friday to help dry the rain-soaked field, but Saturday's downpours were too much to handle.
The golf tournaments will be played today at Northwood and Briarwood country clubs, weather permitting. Check The Meridian Star sports section in the coming days for more information about re-scheduling the softball tournaments.
