With little opposition and no discussion, the Meridian City Council voted Tuesday to approve the Jackson architectural firm of Dale and Associates to design a $7 million, 500-car downtown parking garage.
The garage represents the city's commitment to The Grand Opera House revitalization project. The project is a $26 million effort to revitalize the historic opera house and the Marks-Rothenberg building.
Once complete, the opera house will be restored to its original look and the Marks-Rothenberg building will become the Riley Education and Performing Arts Center. The parking garage will accommodate students and visitors to the center.
City leaders now plan to begin talks with Dale and Associates to negotiate a price for designing the parking lot. Doug Dale, president of Dale and Associates, said he doesn't know when he would complete the design.
