Excellence in education

Meridian Community College student Amy Roberts of Quitman earned first place in dental-terminology spelling at the National Health Students of America competition in Atlanta last month.
East Central Community College student Martha Sawyer of Raleigh received second place in the human growth and development competition and MCC student Kerry Lewis of Meridian won third place in the physical therapy aide competition.
Students who ranked in the top 10 in the following competitions include the following:
MCC Nancy Davis of Collinsville, medical terminology; Rhonda Hornbeck of Quitman, nutrition knowledge; Tashonda Bell of Meridian, pathophysiology knowledge; Rhonda Griffith of Meridian, researched speaking; Christina Boswell of Philadelphia, medical lab assisting; Becca Webb of Stonewall, physical therapy aide.
ECCC Crystal Arnauly of McCool, extemporaneous health poster; Stephanie Ward of Collinsville, pathophysiology and national health care issues; Tiffany Simmons of Newton, nutrition; Ellen Boykin of Sebastopol, extemporaneous writing.
Trisi Baskin of Meridian and Lori Anne Dickens of Hickory are Ralph E. Young Sr. Scholars at Meridian Community College.
The MCC Foundation funds the $1,000 scholarships annually through an endowment established by the Young family.
Baskin is an accounting major. Dickens is a sophomore in the business and office technology program.
Robby Atkinson of Enterprise is the C.B. "Dough" and Alice Rawlings Scholar at Meridian Community College for 2001-2002.
The $1,000 scholarship is funded by an endowment established through the MCC Foundation by Norma Rawlings Webb of Birmingham, Ala., as a memorial tribute to her parents.
Atkinson, manager of the MCC Eagle baseball team, is a sophomore who is planning to teach and coach.
David Culpepper and Natalie Myatt, both of Meridian, attended Mississippi Governor's School this summer on the campus of Mississippi University for Women.
The three-week residential honors program provides academic, creative and leadership experiences for high school juniors and seniors who have demonstrated exceptional achievement and leadership qualities.
SCOOBA The following licensed practical nursing students graduated July 19 from East Mississippi Community College:
Laura Shelton, Natasha McGraw and Casey Asmus, all of DeKalb; Tawanda Clark and Shalondia Woods, both of Macon; Sonia Martin of Toomsuba; Danielle Scott of Scooba and Tracey Mobley of York, Ala.
