Chief deputy issues warning about scam

By By Sheila Blackmon/The Meridian Star
July 28, 2001
At least two Lauderdale County residents have fallen victim to salesmen for a fraudulent construction company making the rounds, Chief Deputy Mike Mitchell said Friday.
Mitchell said when victims try to locate someone from the company to get the work done, they discover the names on the contract are fictitious. The phone numbers are blocked or disconnected, and they get no response from the post office box listed as the company address.
Double-S Construction has a Morton address, but the company is not listed in any local phone directory, Mitchell said.
Mitchell urges residents to ask for a business card and verify the business is a reputable one before paying for any work to be done. He said people can call the East Mississippi Business Development Corporation at 693-1306 to check on a business.
Call the Meridian Police Department's CrimeStoppers line at 485-1860, or the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department's CrimeStoppers line at 917-8888, to report frauds or suspicious salesmen.
