After a decade in office, Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk Donna Jill Johnson still enjoys her work and recently was honored as Circuit Clerk of the Year.
The Mississippi Circuit Clerk's Association named Johnson its first-ever clerk of the year at its annual meeting July 13 in Biloxi. Association president Roger Graves said he was impressed with Johnson's work.
Johnson said she was "heavily involved" with some legislation this year. "We wanted to get some election laws updated, and I was involved in that. We've been very active, and we were in the forefront helping out," she said.
As circuit clerk, Johnson serves as the county registrar, supervises county elections, records marriage licenses and works directly with visitors to the Lauderdale County Courthouse.
Johnson said she loves her job because of her father Herman Gray Johnson Jr. the county's former tax collector and chancery clerk.
Johnson said she wished her father could have seen her win the award.
