Making new Connections' with The Star's readers
By Buddy Bynum/The Meridian Star
July 8, 2001
Readers of The Meridian Star may notice a new section that appears for the first time today. This section "Connections" is designed to build new ties with readers and explore in greater depth the cultural and societal elements that underpin life in East Mississippi and West Alabama.
We believe people make a community work. People form the foundation on which our institutions are based. These pages will include features and photographs focused on local people, their interests, and the things that are important to them as they live, work and raise their families in this area. Articles submitted by our readers are welcomed.
Connections will appear on Sundays and Wednesdays, replacing the pages previously known as "Lifestyles." Weddings, birth announcements, local food features and news from community development clubs will run in Connections.
Development of this new section required changes in assignment for two veteran staff members here at The Star. Regional Editor Steve Swogetinsky will assume responsibility for Connections and veteran journalist Ida Brown, who has 18 years experience in reporting and editing roles with The Star, most recently as Lifestyles editor, will take on the new responsibility of Special Sections Editor.
In her new role, working closely with Managing Editor Suzanne Monk, Ida will assume responsibility for the editorial content and contributions to The Meridian Star's special sections. She will be the Newsroom liaison on matters involving special sections. She will coordinate writing, photography, layout and other elements of special sections.
Using his extensive knowledge of our coverage area, Steve will use a balance of head, heart and humor to report on the forces that influence the personalities, traditions, habits and culture of local people.
These two strategic areas hold great promise for The Meridian Star and its readers. Ida and Steve are approaching these new tasks with energy and enthusiasm, and we believe our readers will share our excitement at this new approach. Our central goal remains to deliver information that enriches the reading experience and further enhances The Star's special role as this community's daily newspaper.
