A spokesman for the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department said a woman returning to her home on Valley Road Friday afternoon surprised a burglar, who then attacked her as she tried to escape.
The attack occurred about 4:30 p.m.
Maj. Ward Calhoun declined to identify the victim, but said she was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Calhoun said the suspect left the scene in a white four-door older model Toyota Corolla. Sheriff's deputies are searching for the attacker, described as a heavy-set black man, about 6 feet tall and weighing 245 pounds.
Residents who think they may have information that could help solve this crime are asked to call the Lauderdale County Sheriff's Department at 482-9800, or CrimeStoppers at 917-8888.
