The Buddy McGhee six-person scramble golf tournament to benefit the American Cancer Society is scheduled June 23-24 at Briarwood Country Club. Tee times are 8:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.
There is a $300 per team entry fee ($50 per player) and teams must be entered by June 21. Briarwood Golf Shop gift certificates will be awarded as prizes.
Golfers should form their own teams. To register call the Briarwood Golf Shop at 681-6185.
Smith gets hole-in-one at Briarwood
Matthew Smith, a 17-year-old member of the West Lauderdale golf team, made a hole-in-one on the 154-yard, par-3 No. 16 at Briarwood Country Club on May 26.
Smith used a pitching wedge to get the ace en route to a 1-under par 71.
Witnesses were Bruce Clopton, Brett Clopton, Cole Clopton, and Ross McWilliams.
Forlaw aces No. 5 at Briarwood
David Forlaw used an 8-iron to get a hole-in-one on the 145-yard, par-3 No. 5 at Briarwood Country Club on May 27.
The shot was witnessed by Ralph Germany and Clint Waddell.
Cobb gets ace at Northwood
Grey Cobb used an 8-iron to record a hole-in-one on the 140-yard, par-3 No. 7 at Northwood Country Club Saturday.
Witnesses were Glenn Taylor, Jimmy Carle, Scott Morgan, Bubba Hampton, and David Ray.
ECCC rodeo qualifies for nationals
Two members of the East Central Community College rodeo team will test their skills on the national level.
Sara Wilson of Mendenhall and Natalie Tillman of Union will compete in the College National Finals Rodeo beginning June 11 in Casper, Wyoming. They advanced to the national event after splitting third- and fourth-place, respectively, in the Break Away average at the regional playoffs held in Enid, Okla.
East Central's women's team finished fifth overall in the regional competition and placed second in the Ozark Region.
The ECCC Rodeo team is coached by Larry Dial of Livingston, Ala. Tracy Dearing serves as advisor.
MCC adds two to tennis teams
Meridian Community College tennis coach Wanda McPhail has added two players from Pascagoula High School to her teams for next year.
Charlotte Heidelberg played doubles, singles, and mixed doubles at PHS. Her senior team was a semifinalist at state and was division champion her junior and senior years.
Heidelberg was named to the Mississippi Coca-Cola All-Star Team as a senior. She also graduated ninth in her class.
McPhail has also added Matthew McElhaney to her men's roster.
McElhaney played baseball, tennis, and football for the Panthers. His tennis team, under the direction of coach Randy Mitchell, finished with an 11-0 record his senior year and was the division champion two years in a row. They went to the quarterfinals in the state tournament his junior year and the semifinals his senior year.
McElhaney was ranked No. 6 in boys 18 and under in the state of Mississippi and ranked 4.0 in the United States.
Garrett inks with Eagles
Meridian Community College head baseball coach Russ McNickle has signed Philip Garrett of Northeast Lauderdale to the Eagle baseball roster for the 2002 season.
Garrett is a middle infielder.
MCC track standouts ink with colleges
Four Meridian Community College track and field student-athletes have signed letters of intent to continue their studies and track careers at senior colleges.
MCC's Gideon Chepkwony has signed with Norfolk State University in Virginia. Dale Moorehouse is headed to Mississippi State University, Doella Miller has inked with the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Shannon Weaver is going to the University of Southern Mississippi.
Rush/MCC baseball camp this week
The Rush/Meridian Community College Baseball camp is scheduled for June 4-8. The camp for ages 7-9 will be held Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 9 a.m.-noon at MCC.
Camp for ages 10-12 will be held Wednesday, June 6, from 1-4 p.m. and Thursday and Friday, June 7-8, from 9 a.m. -noon at MCC.
Registration fee per camper is $40 and includes a camp t-shirt. Registration will begin at 8 a.m. For more information call 484-868O.
