DECATUR Newton County deputies are searching for a man who escaped custody Wednesday after appearing in court on a child exploitation charge.
Newton County Sheriff Jackie Knight said Mark McElhenny, 35, of Oktibbeha County, was arrested Tuesday at a house in Morton.
Knight said McElhenny was visiting relatives in Decatur when he allegedly exposed himself to minors at a trailer park and made inappropriate remarks.
Municipal Judge Danny Clearman was setting bond at McElhenny's initial court appearance when the inmate "broke and ran," Knight said. McElhenny escaped from the booking area of the Newton County Sheriff's Department.
Knight said Decatur police officials, who also have warrants for McElhenny's arrest, are assisting in the search.
Knight said McElhenny is not charged with a violent crime and is not considered dangerous.
Anyone who has any information about McElhenny's whereabouts should call the Newton County Sheriff's Department at 635-2101.
