Denise Allen McMullen's father is on her mind today.
The Meridian police detective, in trying to comprehend what her father experienced during his two tours in Vietnam, was inspired to write a poem in his honor.
Through the years, Allen has tried to understand why her father came back from the conflict a different man.
She is thankful her father returned when so many other men did not.
McMullen's father, Oliver Wayne Allen, volunteered for two tours in Vietnam. He lives in Jacksonville now and is employed by the Florida Department of Corrections.
The poem that accompanies this story is dedicated to him.
