Fence erection for Fairbank's Scales a precautionary' measure

Lauderdale County supervisors have agreed to erect a fence for a Meridian company, Fairbanks Scales, at public expense.
The company is located inside Meridian city limits on Old Highway 80.
Officials at Fairbanks Scales, which manufactures truck scales, requested the fence about three weeks ago, Hiatt said. It will be erected on the county property adjacent to Fairbanks.
He said he got a quote from United Fence Company but is having trouble getting a second competitive quote.
Hiatt said he could not say how much United Fence Company officials quoted in case he ends up having to take sealed bids for the project, which he will have to do if can't get a second quote.
He said the amount is more than $1,500 but below the $10,000 mark that requires supervisors to advertise for bids.
Hiatt said supervisors have authorized other work on county property in the past to benefit private companies in the name of economic development.
The apartments near the company were built within the last year and a half, he said, and no problems have arisen. The fence would be a "precautionary" measure.
